One of the most important elements of installing a new luxury vinyl floor is the subfloor preparation. Simply, this means the work to be carried out to your existing floor before your new Karndean or Amtico floor can be fitted.

If, once all existing floorcoverings have been removed you have a wooden subfloor (floorboards etc) then you will need to fit plywood prior to fitting your new Karndean or Amtico floor.

The industry standard is to use a 6mm thick plywood, secured every 100mm with a ringshank nail. If your floorboards are uneven then sometimes it maybe necessary to fit a thicker plywood, perhaps 9mm but never be tempted to use a plywood thinner than 6mm as this is not suitable and using a plywood thinner than 6mm would also invalidate your guarantee.

Once the plywood is fitted the next step is to skim over the floor with a feather finish type product such as Karndeans skimcoat. This will infill any nail holes or gaps in the ply, leaving a flat surface ready to receive your new Karndean or Amtico floor.

If, once all existing floorcoverings have been removed you have a solid subfloor (concrete, asphalt etc) then you will need to skim the floor with a latex screed, this is a levelling compound that is poured onto the floor which once dry, leaves a smooth finish for your new flooring to be fitted to. Once fully dry, your floor fitter will rub down the screeded floor to ensure a smooth and flat laying surface. Your solid subfloor is now ready to receive your new Karndean or Amtico Floor.
